Optics is a branch of physics concerned with the study of light phenomena perceived by the eye, or detected by optical sensors. In geometrical optics, light is considered to propagate in the form of light rays, which represent the path of light. It enables the design, study and production of many current optical systems such as telescopes, microscopes, mirrors...
For the notion of rays to be applicable, the wavelength of light must be very small compared with all the characteristic lengths of the medium under consideration. When this hypothesis is no longer verified, typically vibratory phenomena such as diffraction, interference and polarization come into play.Thus associating to wave optics.
This course, entitled “Notions of optics”, will familiarize you with the basic concepts required to master the various phenomena of geometrical optics and wave optics.
The aim of this module is to give :
* In the first place, it gives students a global vision of the applications of optics, both in everyday life and in the field of research ;
* Secondly, to show him how important and complementary this discipline (optics) is to other disciplines (electronics, biology, medicine....).
